Real-World Example

Inrush Current Limiter for a 6-MVA Substation

Sometimes, a seemingly minor technical challenge determines whether a project can go online at all.

In May 2025, a grid operator initially refused to connect a 6-MVA substation because the rapid voltage fluctuations caused by the high transformer inrush current were too severe.

Working with a system provider, WATTKRAFT developed a suitable solution within three months: an inrush current limiter designed to specifically limit the inrush current. This allowed the substation to be connected to the medium-voltage side in a controlled manner and—despite necessary delays—to be put into operation.

The solution has since proven itself in other projects as well: WATTKRAFT has already supported ten additional customers in implementing the system.

What began as a unique challenge has become a solution that can be applied to other projects.
